Anamarie and I recently saw Avatar in the theater. With four young kids, actually going to the theater requires a special occasion; it was our anniversary (18 wonderful years!!!). As we were walking out of the theater, Anamarie said that that was the first movie she had seen where she was ready to instantly turn around and see it again. Needless to say, we loved the movie.
James Cameron’s genius is that he creates movies that are so visually stunning that one viewing is not enough. His special effects are a feast for the eyes. The scenery was spectacular and seeing it in 3D makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the action. Even though the critics felt the storyline was weak, it held us spellbound for almost 3 hours. The aspect of the movie that really caught our attention was the underlying message; we are connected with everything around us.
One of the things we discuss in our book, What You Don’t Fix… Your Kids Inherit, is how our thoughts are vibrations that connect us with everything. It’s how the Law of Attraction works. It attracts to us what we spend most of our time thinking about. Because this movie is a sensory experience of the lessons and the 8 Universal Laws of Nature we are teaching our children, Anamarie and I want to take our kids to see the movie. It will be a great way create a dialogue which relates our connection with everything around us. Plus, Avatar in 3D is one of those movies that only comes around once in a great while, like Star Wars, ET, and Titanic.
But, is Avatar ok for our kids to see? That is something Anamarie and I have been discussing and we think, yes, it is fine for our 12 year old daughter. We feel pretty good with our 8 year old son seeing it as well. There are some scary parts when the creatures of the planet are trying to get the main character of the movie, Jake. The movie also contains some intense war scenes, but we think that the positive aspects outweigh these things. We were somewhat hesitant about our 6 year old son attending. We have explained some of the scary parts already, and he has seen some of the vicious creatures in movie trailers so we have decided to take him as well. We have decided not to take our 3 year old. He’s a bit too young to understand the underlying concepts, and the very-real feeling creatures will be too much for him.
This blog post wouldn’t be complete without tiny disclaimer; as with all things, you are the parent and you are the best judge of what is appropriate for your children. This is a movie you will want to preview on behalf of your children. Your investment of time and resources will be worth it. You will come away with a new sense of awareness.
We would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this. Let us know what you think about the movie’s messages and what aged kids should and should not see Avatar.
Blessings!
