The Winter Olympics

I just love the Olympics.  There is just something about seeing athletes at the top of their game.  You know that the athletes have spent hours practicing and preparing for their big event and it is a joy to see them doing what they love to do.  It is an inspiration for our children to see these athletes from around the world going for their goal of gold.

As our family watches this year’s winter Olympic games, I am going to take advantage of the opportunities to talk to our kids about their goals.  Each and every athlete competing has had a goal to make it to the Olympic games and I’m sure their goal is to go home with gold.  I plan to talk to my kids about the things that the athletes may have done while setting their goals, like writing them down, having a goal board, and visualizing what they want.  I will take the opportunity to talk to my kids about their goals and will implement these things with them.  I would encourage you to do the same with your kids.  And if you don’t have your goals written down or on a goal board, implement these things for yourself.  Make this something you do together with your kids as there are no words that you can say that will be as powerful as your kids seeing you model the behavior yourself.

So, as you take time to enjoy watching the great competition that will come in these Olympic games, look for opportunities to have conversations with your kids.  Help them feel the excitement of the athletes as they achieve their goals and turn conversations into learning experiences that will excite your kids as they write out goals of their own.
