What Does Our Mind Look Like?

by Cory Seidel on June 9, 2011

Before we go any further, we would first like to point out that we are going to start getting into some really deep concepts. It’s not every day that we focus on understanding how our mind works and why we do, say and think the things we do. It is important to know how your beliefs are created in order to rewrite new beliefs that will help you change your life.

The majority of people use the terms brain and mind interchangeably. The two, however, are very different. Our brain is an organ that is part of our central nervous system. It is the control center of the body that enables us to learn, feel, and move. Our mind, on the other hand, encompasses every cell of our body and is responsible for our higher functions such as reasoning, thought, and memory and has the capability to expand beyond our physical body. It is part of the infinite energy of the Universe.

So how does your mind expand beyond your body? Have you ever felt like you were being watched and turned to find out that someone was indeed staring at you? That was their mind reaching out to you with laser precision, and you felt that connection without using your eyes. What does your mind look like? Do you have a picture? Most people envision a picture of a brain. Our mind looks nothing like the grey head of cauliflower we’ve all seen in textbooks.

Unfortunately, the mind is something abstract and cannot be easily pictured. When was the last time you had to describe a difficult concept to your child? Was it easier to fumble over the words or take out a box of crayons and draw out a picture? Or, if you have older kids, did you search the Internet to find a descriptive image?

One day we were trying to explain how the mind worked to our daughter, Justine, for the umpteenth time, and we finally decided to draw her a picture. After we used the diagram, she said, “Why didn’t you show me that before? It makes sense to me now.” Just as children think in pictures, so do adults.

Think about your last family outing for a moment. What did you see? Did you see a scrolling marquee of words describing the outing? No, instead you probably saw a mental image; like a movie on the screen of your mind as if you were enjoying a family video.

In our next post we will give you an image that we were shown that represents the mind. It gives us a visual representation for the mind so that it is no longer abstract.

Do you have a good way to explain the mind? If you do, please share!
